Tribute to Alan Richards

Alan Richards being presented with his honorary membership from the Noojee and District Historical Society.

The Noojee and District Historical Society would like to pay tribute and send our condolences to the entire Richards family after the recent passing of Alan Richards. As the son of Robert and Elsie Richards, he was born and lived at the last selection which is situated at the base of Tooronga Falls. He passed away on August 25th, 2012 and the funeral service was held on August 31st with his six children in attendance.

Alan’s passing see’s his sister Lillian as the only surviving member of the Richards family that lived at the last selection. At this time the oak tree, planted by Elsie Richards in 1913, stands as the only reminder of anyone living at the last selection. Planted as a seedling, the tree is now 100 years old.  The Society aims to commemorate the family by placing a plaque on the oak tree which is to be named ‘the Richards Oak.’

The Society would like to thank the Richards family for all their support, over the many years we have been in contact with them they have provided priceless photo’s and stories which provide a window into the lives of the Tooronga Valley early settlers.
