The Queen's Birthday Fishing Competition

On June 11th and 12th, 2012 the Noojee and District Historical Society held a fishing competition to help raise funds to move the J-550 locomotive from Rotary Park in Warragul to Noojee.

The event, held in conjunction with the Alpine Trout Farm, gave new and established fishers the chance to catch one of four tagged golden trout released into the pond each day (2 per day). Each fish was worth $100 if caught and the prospect of making easy money brought holiday makers to the pond in droves.

A few lucky fisherman that undertook the challenge caught glimpses of the golden beauties and some even managed to hook them but the fish managed to break the lines or spit the hooks.

All money from the tagged fish not caught during the competition was kindly donated by the Trout Farm to help the Society with their efforts towards moving the train.

Healsville locals Venloe Scott and partner Ray kindly lent their services to the event on Monday by intriguing locals and tourists alike with a horse drawn cart ride tour of the town. Her two Clydesdales, Ranger and Bill, enthusiastically pulled groups of travellers around the town centre giving them an experience like no other.

The fishing competition drew individuals of all ages, young families shared the experience of fishing for the first time and seasoned fisherman enjoyed the tranquility of fishing in a picturesque bush setting.

A special thank you to The Alpine Trout Farm for providing the venue for the event, the marquee and all bait, rods, buckets and ponds full of fish.

Many locals also donated their services to the event including Gattis Butcher for donating 10kg of various meats, Alan Tatlow and partner for providing live music, Baw Baw Old Engines Club and local truck and car clubs for donating a display of various old vehicles and trucks and support from the local shops.
