Back in Time Event January 2015

Back in Time at Noojee Heritage Centre Event

Despite predictions of heavy rain, the society’s Back in Time event at the heritage centre on Sunday 11th January 2015 was blessed with near perfect weather.  Hundreds of visitors had a great family day out whilst at the same time helping the society raise funds for future projects and enlivening the township of Noojee.  The event was well supported by society members and their friends, along with members of the public, all did a sterling job volunteering for the various tasks that contributed so much to the day’s success.Click on image to download the Back in Time Event Report

A big draw for visitors was undoubtedly the Wheels at Noojee classic car and bike show, run by Barry Nugent.  Although there were a number of other classic car and bike events on the day in the region, our event attracted over 100 cars and bikes and hosted a visit from the Ford Owners Restorers and Drivers Club of Australia.  In addition to the cars and bikes, there were a large contingent of classic and vintage old tractors and trucks on display from the Baw Baw Old Engine & Auto Club.

Prizes were awarded for the best in show, best in category and a number of encouragement awards, sponsored by Piedmont Wines and Ceramic ‘N’ Glass screen printers.  Traction engines also made a welcome return to the heritage centre and kept visitors entertained as they thundered up and down School Road, fired by wood donated by Morwell Garden Supplies.

Everyone commented on the excellent background music that was played throughout the event by Gippsland 104.7 FM presenter Tim Ryan (“Truck’n with Tim”) and John Heinen, who both gave their services free of charge.  John Heinen had travelled all the way from Adelaide to entertain the crowd from the mobile stage made available to us courtesy of A G Brown Sawmill.

Studio 51 provided a media presence by filming the event for a DVD that will be available for purchase in the heritage centre and Tom from the Warragul & Drouin Gazette was on-hand to take photographs.  Once again, Win TV News took an interest in us and came along to film and report on our activities, with a clip of the event going out on that evening’s news bulletins.

Dunav Butchery and Small Goods from Springvale generously donated the sausages for the sausage sizzle and the Grain Bakery from Clayton donated all the bread.   Tom and Joe did their usual excellent job with the mobile BBQ that was provided for us by Baw Baw Shire Council and ensured that Linda John was kept busy taking the money!

Ian Lester displayed and demonstrated his collection of saws that were used in the past by the local timber industry.  Shawn Taylor, from Australia’s Computer Techs, along with family and friends, kept the children entertained all day with face painting and fairy floss.

Wine tasting and wine sales from Piedmont wines, an antiques and collectables stall and the attractions inside the heritage centre, overseen by Ivan, Florence and Melina, all contributed to the day’s success.

The groundwork for the event, literally, had been prepared by Wally Redl.  Without Wally’s expertise and his grader, the area designated for the trucks and tractors would not have been available.  Wally also brought a team along to help with the parking and traffic flow management.

Although unable to attend on the Sunday, Janet spent a lot of time tidying the site in preparation for the day and Percy worked most of the previous day helping to mark out the site and was then on-hand to attach the signage, erect marquees and keep the area clean and tidy during the event.

The committee would like to express its thanks to the local businesses in Noojee - The Red Parrot, The Noojee General Store, The Outpost Retreat and the Noojee Hotel and to other businesses and individuals who supported the event with prizes and special offers.

The raffle was a great success thanks to the following sponsors: Satin Edge Photographers, Liberty Inn Pizza Bar, Déjà vu Hair & Nail, Luciano's Restaurant & Bar, The Outpost Retreat Noojee, Bunnings Warragul and Angelina Langoor.

Back in Time organiser, Janiene and coordinator, Will, are hoping to make this an even bigger and better event next year and one that will attract hundreds more visitors to the heritage centre and the attractions around Noojee
